Day 3 : Meenakshi Amman of Madurai🙏🏻

Goddess Meenakshi is the main deity of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Koil at Madurai. An incarnation of Goddess Parvati, She was born to King Malayadhwaja Pandian and grew up to be the beautiful and strong warrior queen of Madurai.

The popular image of Meenakshi Amman portrays Her with fish-shaped eyes (hence the name ‘meen’akshi), emerald-green skin and holding a parrot on Her right hand, clad in green or red with beautiful ornaments. Eventually, She married Lord Shiva in the form of Sundareshwarar, which is celebrated as the grand Meenakshi Thirukalyanam festival.

Every year, the temple draws in more than a million pilgrims and tourists during the vibrant 10-day Meenakshi Thirukalyanam festival in the Tamil month of Chithirai.

Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and Her consort, Lord Sundareshwarar, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Koil is one of the most magnificent temples in India. The temple has four Rajagopurams and the famous city of Madurai is built around the Meenakshi temple.
